Rocca Pinta, the town where it all happens in the books. Real or fictional?

Rocca Pinta may be a figment of my imagination, but let me spill the beans – it’s actually inspired by the charming town of Malcesine, nestled on the shores of Lake Garda in Italy. It offers cobblestone streets, a quaint harbor, and breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. And let’s not forget about the star of the show – Malcesine Castle, perched on a hilltop.

Despite its tongue-twisting name, Rocca Pinta draws in tourists like bees to honey for its authentic Italian cuisine, cozy vibes, and that unbeatable Mediterranean weather. It’s a hotspot for weddings, just like in the book where I (or, Bree)  play the role of the wedding photographer. And the wedding planning company that arranges these events. Yep, that’s the real deal, too.

So, if you’re in need of a quick getaway, Malcesine is the place to be.  Whether you’re into leisurely strolls around town or adrenaline-pumping cable car rides up Monte Baldo, this place has got it all. Cyclists, hikers, and water sports enthusiasts – rejoice!

And if all else fails, sit back in a lakeside bar like the characters in the book. Sit back, relax, and crack open a bottle of vino with your pals. After all, life’s too short not to enjoy the good things in great company. Cheers to that!

Mind you, I suggest you head over here in the summer months. It does tend to close down in the winter, making it difficult to find a restaurant, hotel, or, well, indeed, anything open at all.

Someone who asked me about Rocca Pinta recently asked me if there was anything in particular they should bring to a place like this. I didn’t have to think about it for long at all. I quickly replied, ‘Crumpets’, but well, they are just for me! Crumpets, the food I dream about—I just can’t get over here.
