Petra may not be my top pick when it comes to favourite characters, but was she a blast to write about! Her crazy, obsessive, controlling, and needy personality provided endless material for exploration.
Despite her flaws, there was something undeniably intriguing about Petra’s relentless drive and determination to find love wherever it popped up.
Writing about Petra allowed me to dive into manipulation and the extreme lengths people will go to in order to get what they want. In the end, delving into Petra’s character was exhilarating. It was like taking a wild ride through a twisted maze of emotions and motivations, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I think Petra’s loss of control in Ireland stemmed from a whirlwind of insecurity and longing, which led her to a desperate need to control Liam’s behavior. Haven’t we all been there at some point? Teetering on the edge of losing control, craving answers, and letting our emotions get the best of us. Most of us snap out of it, realising our obsession and seeing things from a rational perspective before we do anything stupid. Petra was definitely in too deep, with no lifeguard in sight. She did what we all may have wanted to do, yet we would have known it was just a bit too freaky and out there to actually do it.
Petra’s quick rebound to another relationship made it clear that Liam was just a pawn in her game of emotional chess. It wasn’t about him; it was about filling a void in her life with anyone who would do.
I imagine that working with her as a colleague in the second book, “Better Mistakes,” was like pulling teeth out without an anaesthetic. I know that sitting in an office next to her would have driven me mad.
As the story unfolds, Petra evolves and grows, but that underlying insecurity sticks to her like glue. We eventually uncover the reasons behind her behaviour, diving into her journey of healing with plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way. So buckle up; it’s going to be a bumpy ride on the Petra Express.
